What Is an AI Engineer? Role, Skills and How to Become One

7 min readUpdated October 29, 2026

An AI engineer builds products and features on top of foundation models (large language models and other pretrained models), usually via APIs or open-weight models. The title became popular in 2023, as companies rushed to ship LLM features and realized the work was different from both classic machine learning and classic software engineering.

What does an AI engineer do day to day?

  • Designs prompts and context: what instructions, documents and tool results the model sees.
  • Builds retrieval (RAG) so models answer from company data.
  • Connects models to tools and APIs, and builds agents and workflows.
  • Writes evals to measure quality and catch regressions.
  • Handles production concerns: latency, cost, rate limits, safety, monitoring.

In small teams one person often does all three. The distinction is about where the work's center of gravity lies.

Skills you need

  1. Strong programming fundamentals, usually in Python or TypeScript.
  2. LLM mechanics: tokens, sampling, context windows, model selection.
  3. Prompt and context engineering, structured output and tool calling.
  4. Retrieval: embeddings, chunking, vector and hybrid search.
  5. Evaluation: datasets, graders and metrics.
  6. Security and reliability: prompt injection, guardrails, retries, observability.

How to become one

If you're a software engineer, you're most of the way there: learn the LLM-specific skills above and build two or three projects with real evals. If you're new to programming, learn Python first, then follow a structured, hands-on path. Reading alone won't stick. Practice is what builds intuition for how models behave.

Frequently asked questions

Is AI engineering a good career?

Demand for engineers who can ship reliable LLM features has grown quickly since 2023, and the skills compound with general software engineering experience.

Do AI engineers train models?

Rarely from scratch. They mostly use pretrained models, and sometimes fine-tune them for specific behavior, often together with ML engineers.
